Starr Saphir was an amazing woman who, for over 40 years, led bird walks in New York City's Central Park. For a donation of $5-8 bucks, Saphir (pronounced 'Sapphire') glassed for over 50 species per day at times, and drew a steady following of fellow-bird watchers year round. The 200+ day-in, day-out birders of Central Park record their sightings in a central notebook in the park's Boathouse. Ms. Saphir passed away in February of this year. She herself left behind over 80 such notebooks.Saphir is featured in the 2012 documentary Birders: The Central Park Effect available to watch now on Netflix.
